Rare 1920s Black and Gold Embroidered Dragon Kimono Robe
Rare 1920s Black and Gold Embroidered Dragon Kimono Robe
Exceptional 1920s era black satin Japanese dragon kimono featuring dramatic gold embroidery. Japanese dragons are tied directly to deities. As many of the Japanese gods shape-shifted into dragons in Japanese folklore and stories, depictions of dragons are used throughout the Japanese culture as symbols of strength, courage and magic.
Dragons are believed to control rain, fire and the earth, and just as this kimono depicts, there are two large dragons flying among the clouds. Beautifully embroidered with thick metallic gold chord, the faces of the dragons are raised above a cotton lining, while a magenta cotton thread is used for the tongue. Embroidered by hand with couched stitches, this kimono also includes its original silk fringed sash. Truly a magical and stunning textile representing Japanese culture and history, this beautiful kimono is sure to bring you joy every time you wear it.

Length of sleeves (measured from shoulder seam to hem): 13"
Sleeve drop length: 22"

Condition: Excellent vintage condition, which is rare for an item of this age. I can find no holes in the silk. Embroidery is mostly strong, in a few areas it needs to be tacked down slightly but it does not detract at all from the wearability or beauty.
